Employment, qualification and labour costs

From sbout approx. 79,000 persons employed in the region Flensburg/Schleswig are 38,500 working in the city of Flensburg, of it nearly 30% in 120 enterprises of the processing trade. The producers are thereby after the suppliers the second largest group of employers. Together with trade and handicraft the service sector strenghtens the entire region. It places scarcely 60% of the jobs with increasing tendency.

Due to decreasing but still high unemployment Flensburg/Schleswig approx. 9,500 workers are available, among them a high portion are qualified. Training programs of the employment administration permit the training on a certain qualification level. The existing worker potential is motivated and flexibel, so that enterprises can grow in the region.

Also workers from Denmark are available - an advantage with perfect language skills. In 2008 approx. 12,500 workers commute through the German Danish border towards the north and 1,200 workers are working in the south.

The labor costs are thereby on a favorable level below average. Researches have shown that they are settled with 89% of the Federal average and are 9% below the average in Schleswig-Holstein. The favorable cost of living and low real estate costs.

Training and further education on high level takes place on the campus Sandberg in Flensburg. The University of applied sciences Flensburg and the University of Flensburg have registered over 7.000 students in a broad qualification span, which gives companies an excellent source of human ressources. Synergies to enterprises, which can profit in the transfer of technology and knowledge are natural. Apart from technical and economic academic subjects new German-Danish courses of studies developed, which is carrying out an additional qualification offer for the regional economy.

For the transfer of technology the technology center Flensburg exists. Approx. 6,000 professional attendees are informed annually in fairs, Workshops and lectures about new operational or technical solutions.

The offer at part-time vocational schools and specialized High Schools are broad. From further training courses for the management as well as for operational practice the organisation for further education informs about all training courses offered in the region.
